Hong Kong International Airport continues to ride the cargo wave in April

HKIA

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw steady growth in all three air traffic categories in April 2017 with cargo traffic growing an impressive 8.9 per cent to 398,000 tonnes, year-on-year. Flight movements also increased 3.1 per cent 34,740 for the month, while 6.3 million passengers were handled, registering year-on-year growth of 6.0 per cent.

The continuing strong growth in cargo was largely attributed to a 14 per cent year-on-year growth in exports. Amongst the key trading regions, North America and Europe increased most significantly in the month.

Combining March and April to even out the seasonal impact of the Easter holidays, cargo tonnage, and flight movements showed year-on-year growth of 1.9%, 13.4% and 1.8%, respectively.

During the first four months of 2017, HKIA handled 1.5 million tonnes of cargo, up 10.9 per cent, from the same period last year. On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo tonnage registered a year-on-year increase of 7.3 per cent, amounting to 4.7 million tonnes. Passenger traffic meanwhile rose 1.5 per cent to 70.8 million, while flight movements registered a 0.4 per cent increase to 411,485.
