Southwest Airlines has promoted Wally Devereaux to managing director Cargo and Charters, reporting to senior vice president of Operations, Jack Smith. Devereaux is replacing Matt Buckley, who has retired.

“We are fortunate to have such a strong and deep leadership bench among our ranks,” says Southwest Airlines chairman and CEO Gary Kelly of both the Devereux appointment as well as others. “We’ve never had a more talented team of leaders in our history, and together the Southwest Family has never had a brighter future,” he adds.

The Dallas-based Southwest Cargo announced in mid-July it was beginning international shipping, starting with the offering of a cargo product between the US and Mexico City. This was followed by Mexico’s Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos before adding the ability to ship between the US and other international destinations within its network.

This past spring, Southwest Cargo rolled out its new back office and point of sale system: Southwest Cargo Suite. The suite of products and Customer-facing solutions laid the foundation the start of the carrier’s international shipping programme.

Last month the company reported a 5.1 per cent rise, year-on-year, in Q3 revenue to a record USD 5.6 billion and net income of USD 614 million.

“I am grateful to our people for their hard work and resilience, as we continue to consistently deliver stellar margins and returns,” said Kelly.

“For next year, Hawaii is our expansion focus,” he adds. In May the airline announced plans to serve four destinations: Honolulu, Kahului Airport on Mau, Lihue Airport on Kauai, and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole on the leeward side of Hawaii island.

Following FAA approval, Southwest intends to operate its B737 MAX aircraft on non-stop flights from four airports in California – Oakland, San Diego, Mineta San Jose and Sacramento – to Hawaii.
